The Beauty And Charm Of Sidmouth – Devon In South West England
For those in need of a holiday, nothing is more peaceful than the Jurassic Coast in South West England where a little fishing village called Sidmouth – Devon County is located. With a population of around 15,000 year-round, it has become one of the most popular tourist and retirement destinations in England and for good reason.
As a World Heritage Site, Sidmouth not only has been able to maintain its quaint charm, but also became a resort mecca during the Georgian and Victorian periods of the 18th and 19th century. As a result of modernization, the magnificent mansions and villas that were constructed during that time were turned into hotels which guests from all over the world now enjoy.
Located 15 miles (24 km) south of Exeter, the largely elderly population boasts a variety of trades still constructed as has been done for centuries. For those with a fetish for history, rich culture, and country charm, it is hard to beat the offerings here.
One of the main attractions each year is the Sidmouth Folk Week which is a famous folk festival held in August. This event draws hundreds of musicians and visitors each year where marquees are set up in the Blackmore Gardens and The Ham allowing visitors to stroll at their leisure to enjoy to presentations and wares.
Its location on the River Sid in the valley between Peak and Salcombe Hills, next to the Jurassic Coast, in East Devon County’s Natural Beauty Preserve, provide a geography unlike any other on earth. Geologically exposed stones can be found not only from the Jurassic but Triassic periods as well making it an archaeologist’s’s dream destination.
For those visiting during other times of the year one need not worry about finding ample entertainment. The Manor Pavilion has a small arts center as well as theater that produces professional as well as amateur productions. Additionally, the in-town theater keeps residents and visitors in touch with the latest cinematic features and, during the summer, the Sidmouth Town Band plays concerts in the park nightly.
Sidmouth – Devon County became a favorite retreat for famous personages such as Edward, Duke of Kent and his family for good reason. Today, visitors have even more opportunities than were originally available previously with the 200 year old Fields of Sidmouth Department Store, a first-class golf course, an indoor swimming pool, and the best pubs, restaurants, coffee houses, and tea rooms England has to offer. It is definitely a destination worth visiting.
