GREEN PITCHER Q & A
In the 1930’s, Yankee Stadium had a “Green Screen” in center field.?
The purpose of the screen was to was to have the at-bat visitors blinded by a bunch of white shirts over the shoulder of the Yankee pitcher. But when the Yanks were at bat they lowered the screen so that they had a nice dark background for the incoming white pitched ball. My question: Unless the fans could see thru the screen, I don’t see how it worked?
Green curtain in center is sometimes raised and lowered like a window shade to force visiting batters to face a background of white-shirted bleacher fans while allowing Yankees hitters to face a dark green background. Sometimes removed in World Series play to sell more seats.
Back then they didn’t worry so much about the fans, if it gave the home town boys an advantage, so be it. It wasn’t as if they had it up all the time. Besides I’d bet, not being old enough to have been there, you knew if you were going to be seated there and would wear white. You know to help the boys out. Kind of like waving flags at basketball games during free throws.
