Microwave safe? So my mom tells me i should remove the plastic lid from the container when microwaving?
Instead i should put on cling wrap (that sticky plastic wrap) over the container and microwave. Aren’t they both plastic anyway? Is the cling wrap more safe to microwave than the plastic lid on?
Most likely if the product was designed to be put in the microwave and there are microwave instructions on the box – the plastic lid will do just fine in there. Just follow the directions as far as venting the lid.
Cling wrap does have some advantages over some harder plastics. Some plastics, if not designed for the microwave, will melt and fall into the food. This is especially true if the food you are heating has a lot of fat in it and the fat layer has stuck to the lid.
Some brands of cling wrap were designed for microwave use and will stretch if steam gets trapped underneath and will resist melting.
If you are concerned about chemicals leaching into the food (you would not be the only one) don’t use any plastic lid – just a paper towel to contain spatters. Or dump the food into a corning ware or other glass dish and heat up in that.
